Fay Salmon, Project Manager, Moffat Town Hall Redevelopment Trust

How long have you been in post?
Since 20th November 2017
Which geographical area do you cover?
Mainly the DG10 area.
Tell me about your role and day to day duties and responsibilities
This is a new post to promote and develop a new Monday Well-being club within Moffat Town Hall. This club will provide healthy food, entertainment and social interaction for people (of all ages) with long-term health issues or disabilities. The aim of the club is to reduce isolation and provide mental stimulation. My current role involves developing referral forms, criteria for referral and talking to clients about their requirements. I am also in discussion with care agencies, food providers, care homes and Annandale Transport Initiative. Part of the setting up process involves meeting with the Care Commission and relevant agencies plus ensuring policies, procedures and risk assessments are in place. I will be involved in planning activities which interest the clients. We already have Musical Minds lined up and we will look at yoga or gentle chair exercises.
What motivates you most about your job?
Having seen the effect that loneliness and isolation can do to a person, it motivates me to provide opportunities for people to have some time out with their own homes, meeting up with people, making friends and having conversations. It can be valuable to involve different generations and plan their interaction e.g. story telling, finding out about the past.
What has given you most satisfaction at work recently?
When talking to potential clients, I can see how excited they are that a club will be developed to suit their needs.
What is the most challenging aspect of your job?
It can be challenging to ensure everything is in place to set up the club within a given timescale, but we can adapt our plans to take account of that.
What have you done previously (in terms of jobs and skills) which supports you in your current work?
I was the Project Manager of Food Services with the Royal Voluntary Service for fourteen years. I managed 400 volunteers and organised the delivery of the frozen meal service and the meals on wheels service throughout the whole of Dumfries and Galloway. I worked at Bankfoot Nursing Home as Catering Manager for 23 years. I am also a volunteer for the Friday Club at Moffat Town Hall. I manage the meals and organise the menus.
What do you consider to be the benefits of being a member of SHAP?
I can find out more about partner organisations and seek support, as required, for the development of clubs and activities at Moffat Town hall Redevelopment Trust.
How have you been involved in SHAP?
I have attended SHAP meetings and been involved with SHAP through my former role in the Royal Voluntary Service and as a volunteer. I am a member of SHAP in my new post.
What are your hobbies and interests outside work?
I enjoy spending time with my grandchildren and baking. I also like playing bingo with friends and I am a volunteer at the Friday Club In Moffat Town Hall.
