SPOTLIGHT ON - SHAP MEMBERSHIP
adele hannah, young people's sexual health co-ordinator
How long have you been in post?
Tell me about your role and day to day duties and responsibilities.
I cover the whole of Dumfries and Galloway. I manage the C4U – Condoms for you. C4U is Dumfries and Galloway’s 'c' card scheme that provides free condoms for young people aged 14-19. It is a friendly non judgmental confidential service. I manage the condom distribution scheme for hard to reach people. I also manage the postal testing kits for Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea. I keep Facebook and the website up to date. My day is shaped by responding to emails.
What motivates you most about your job?
Sexual health is such an interesting area of health and it is more than STIs and unplanned pregnancy. It is about good intimate relationships, being able to talk to partners about sex and being comfortable with yourself. Having positive sexual health can impact on other areas of health such as physical and mental health.
What has given you most satisfaction at work recently?
Our quarterly newsletter. I like doing the research and sharing what resources/reports I have found on issues relating to sexual health. I also enjoy providing training.
What is the most challenging aspect of your job?
Getting people to acknowledge that sexual health is an important part of our overall health. The way the media reports sexual health gives the impression that all young people are having sex when this is actually not the case. This puts a lot of pressure on young people to have sex and then they regret this.
What have you done previously (in terms of jobs and skills) which supports you in your current work?
My previous job as a residential officer in a hall of residence and also being a mum.
How long have you been involved with SHAP?
What do you consider to be the benefits of being a member of SHAP?
The support it brings through networking. Sexual health is still a taboo issue so it is good to be able to promote sexual health alongside other projects that SHAP does.
How have you been involved in SHAP?
I have been involved in Health Promotion events, facilitated workshops at the annual Big World events and I am a member of the Substance, sexual health and risk taking behaviour group.
What are your hobbies and interests outside work?
Reading, travelling and spending time with my granddaughter.
